Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Health Promotion.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

200 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has satisfied himself that enough is being done to promote safe sex practices having regard to recent figures from the genito-urinary medicine clinic at St. James Hospital, Dublin 8, showing a significant increase in the level of sexually transmitted diseases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24552/00]

The health promotion unit of my Department has maintained a sexual health and safe sex awareness programme for the last number of years. This programme involves the display of safe sex messages in the toilet areas of places of entertainment such as pubs, night clubs, youth clubs, etc. The health promotion unit has also commenced the initial planning phase of an unwanted pregnancy prevention and safe sex awareness campaign which will also focus on the issue of sexually transmitted infections. It is expected that the campaign will be launched later this month or early next month.
