Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax Liability.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

380 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Carlow, who is an old age pensioner, is being assessed for tax; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that her only income is a UK old age pension (details supplied) and that she has submitted this information to the local office; if his Department will withdraw the assessments and clarify the situation. [23876/00]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that, under tax law, the taxpayer's pension paid by the Department of Social Security in the United Kingdom must be treated as income for income tax purposes. It would appear, however, that information furnished by the taxpayer in relation to her income for 1998-99 and 1999-2000 may have been inaccurate in that amounts of income may have been overstated inadvertently. The inspector has requested the taxpayer to forward evidence of her pension payments, for example, a payslip showing the amount she receives each week. When the information is received, the inspector will calculate the taxpayer's liability for the years in question and amend or withdraw estimates as appropriate.
