Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

420 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will review an application for a medical card from a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny who is a lone parent and has three children; if the medical condition of the children and the hardship caused by not having a medical card will be considered; and if the South Eastern Health Board will give an early response to the appeal. [23837/00]

The determination of eligibility for medical cards is the responsibility of the chief executive officer of the appropriate health board. I, as Minister for Health and Children, do not have a function in the issue of medical cards to individuals. However, as the determination of eligibility of the person concerned rests with the chief executive officer of the South Eastern Health Board, I have asked him to have the matter investigated and to reply directly to the Deputy.
