Ceist:

807 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of mobile speed detection units deployed by the gardaí since June 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24777/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 806 and 807 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a pilot scheme is operating at present in the Garda division of Louth-Meath and the Dublin Metropolitan Region where there are two fixed cameras being used between 20 sites. The National Roads Authority and the Garda Síochána are jointly monitoring the operation of the fixed camera system and in the light of experience will extend fixed speed cameras to other parts of the national network.

In relation to mobile speed detection units, I am further informed by the Garda authorities that there is a total of six such units in operation throughout the State since June 1998 and a further unit is expected to be operational shortly. I might add that in addition to the above speed detection equipment the Garda possess laser speed detection guns, in-car camera systems and unmarked motorcycles with in built camera systems.
