Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Court Transcripts.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

810 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason for the delay in providing transcripts in respect of a criminal court case which defence lawyers have been seeking for some considerable time and which are of vital importance for a forthcoming appeal in respect of a person (details supplied). [24813/00]

The administrative arrangements for the provision of transcripts of criminal trials in cases where appeals have been lodged are a matter for the Courts Service and I have no function in the matter. However I am informed by the Courts Service that the transcript in the case in question has now been provided.

I understand from the Courts Service that the issue of the provision of transcripts has been given a high priority by the chief executive officer, who has informed me that new contracts being drawn up as part of a stenography tendering process will ensure that transcripts will be produced more quickly.
