Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Student Support Schemes.

Ceist:

834 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the educational supports available to students attending courses at a training centre (details supplied) in Dublin 8 in view of the fact this centre provides computer training to people who wish to get back into the workforce. [23925/00]

My Department funds vocational training activities in the Dublin 8 area through the City of Dublin VEC which is the statutory body responsible for the provision of vocational education and training there.

Inchicore vocational school is one of the centres which the VEC operates in Dublin 8. This centre offers a range of computer training courses on a full-time basis under the post leaving certificate, PLC, programme. Participants on the PLC programme receive free tuition and are eligible to apply for a means tested maintenance grant.

The VEC also provides vocational education and training in a range of centres throughout the city for early school leavers, Travellers and unemployed adults. These programmes combine an integrated work experience element with literacy, numeracy, IT communications skills and a range of vocational options.

It is planned to expand the range of vocational training courses and centres in the state sector over the coming years as part-time options come on stream under the back to education initiative. All funds assigned to my Department for further education purposes will be required to fund these plans. In these circumstances it is not open to my Department to fund private providers such as the centre in question.
