Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

245 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of provisional licence holders that have been prosecuted for failing to have a qualified driver accompany them while driving a motor vehicle over the past five years; if he will outline the seriousness of such an offence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26035/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the details sought by the Deputy on the number of provisional licence holders that have been prosecuted for failing to have a qualified driver accompany them while driving are not readily available. It would require a considerable amount of Garda time to compile the information sought, which I hope the Deputy will appreciate, could not be justified.

However, the following tabular statement sets out the number of prosecutions for driving licence offences, including the offence referred to by the Deputy:

Year

Prosecutions for Driving Licence Offences

1999

44,300

1998

39,191

1997

36,107

1996

38,371

1995

43,474
