I propose to take Questions Nos. 104 and 232 together.
I am informed by the Courts Service that the information requested by the Deputies is not available in the manner and to the extent which they requested. However, the following information regarding the imposition of fines in the district and circuit courts is available.
The number of fines imposed in the District Court in respect of the legal years ended 31 July 1997, 31 July 1998 and 31 July 1999 was 131,635, 121,647 and 124,578 respectively.
The number of warrants issued during the years ended 31 December 1997 and 31 December 1998 for non-payment of fines was 70,318 and 59,173 respectively. I am informed that the Courts Service is not in a position to provide figures for the number of the above warrants which remain outstanding.
The number of fines imposed and the number of warrants issued and the estimated number of warrants awaiting issue for non-payment of fines in respect of the legal year 1999 and 2000 is not yet available.
The only information available on Circuit Court fines is as follows. The number and value of fines imposed in the Circuit Court in the years ended 31 December 1993 to 31 December 1997 was:
