Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Ceist:

136 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of his recently announced proposals for the greater use of closed circuit television to combat crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25776/00]

The experience to date of Garda CCTV systems shows that it has an important role to play in crime prevention and detection as well as in reassuring the public. The Garda authorities have confirmed its success and advised that assaults, drug-dealing, "on street crime" and so forth have dropped very appreci ably where the cameras are in place. CCTV systems have also addressed a number of policing problems, that is, syringe attacks on tourists and at ATMs and anti-social behaviour, and have proved vital to the success of a number of Garda operations. I plan to expand the use of Garda CCTV systems significantly and will say more about this in the next few weeks.
