Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

139 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders reported to the gardaí in 1999 and to date in 2000; the number of cases in each category in which charges have been brought; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25767/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that 38 murders were recorded by the gardaí in 1999. I understand that 31 of these are detected and that proceedings have commenced in 29 cases.

I am also informed that 34 murders have been recorded to date this year, 27 of which are detected, and that proceedings have commenced in 21 cases. I should point out that the statistics for this year are provisional and subject to change.
