Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Light Rail Project.

Noel O'Flynn

Ceist:

174 Mr. O'Flynn asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the plans she has to develop a light rail public transport similar to Dublin's Luas and the proposed Belfast supertram system, for the greater Cork city area. [27240/00]

Cork Corporation and Cork County Council have commissioned consultants to draw up a Cork Strategic Plan, 2000-20. The provision of public transport for the greater Cork area for the lifetime of the plan will be an integral part of this study. The consultants recently submitted their interim report and have commenced a public consultation process on it in the Cork area. There are a number of specific public transport proposals in the report which are linked to specific land use strategies for the Cork area. The provision of a light rail system is not one of the options that is being considered at this stage.
