Vol. 527 No. 1

Written Answers. - Neurological Diseases.

Ceist:

93 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children if there is a tissue bank established for material from cases of neurological diseases in humans. [28017/00]

A national brain bank has been established at Beaumont Hospital since 1998. Human brain tissue, which is donated to this bank at the time of death by people with neurological disease, is used to carry out vital medical studies into neurological diseases and is regarded as a precious resource by researchers.

The brain bank is supervised by a management committee comprising two neuropathologists, a neurologist and a senior research neuroscientist. Provision has been made for the publication of an annual report on the national brain bank's activities to be made available to the general public.
