Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Austin Currie

Ceist:

204 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the powers of the Office of Public Works to prevent further flooding by the River Griffeen in the Lucan, County Dublin area further to Parliamentary Question No. 225 of 28 November 2000 which stated that the Arterial Drainage (Amendment) Act, 1995, gave the additional power necessary to carry out drainage works for the alleviation of localised flooding. [28490/00]

The Office of Public Works carries out flood relief schemes to the requirement of the appropriate local authority. When a scheme is agreed with a local authority, the Office of Public Works can act under the Arterial Drainage (Amendment) Act, 1995 which enables the Office of Public Works to undertake drainage schemes for the alleviation of localised flooding problems.

In addition, the Office of Public Works from time to time, also co-operates with and provides support for local authorities in the preparation of flood alleviation proposals by the councils within their jurisdictional areas. The Office of Public Works has written to the local authority in question in the matter and in that context, the offer was made to provide whatever support was requested by that authority in carrying out its responsibilities to relieve flooding.
