Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Charitable Organisations.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

206 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the number of tax exempt charitable bodies, the names of which have not been revealed to the public in the lists published to date by the Revenue Commissioners; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28521/00]

I am advised that the current list of tax exempted charitable bodies, published by the Revenue Commissioners at the end of September 2000, contains all but one tax exempted charity as of that date. The omission from the list of the charity in question arose following an objection to publication it lodged with the information commissioner in 1999 and which objection was upheld by him. The particular reason on which the objection was based no longer obtains and the body in question is not maintaining its objection to publication. Consequently, it will appear in the next update of the list of tax exempted charitable bodies at the end of December 2000.

The Revenue Commissioners have also informed me that the list of tax exempted charitable bodies is updated on a quarterly basis to take account of both newly exempted bodies and of bodies which notify Revenue that they have ceased activities. Copies of the list are available in diskette format from the charities section of the Revenue Commissioners and the list can also be accessed on the Revenue website at www. revenue.ie. As of 30 November 2000, the number of tax exempted charitable bodies was 5,026.

207 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he will confirm whether an organisation (details supplied) enjoyed tax exempt charitable status during its existence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28522/00]

The Revenue Commissioners have informed me that at no stage was a charitable tax exemption granted to the body in question.
