Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

John Perry

Ceist:

289 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government in relation to the essential repairs grants scheme administered by local authorities, the types of repairs which are covered under this grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28642/00]

The essential repairs grants scheme is administered by local authorities in accordance with the conditions of the Housing (Disabled Persons and Essential Repairs Grants) Regulations, 1993, which require, inter alia, that the house cannot be made fit for human habitation in all respects at a reasonable cost and where, with the carrying out of necessary essential repairs, the life of the house would be prolonged to provide an acceptable standard of accommodation for the occupants.

Within these parameters, it is a matter for local authorities to consider the nature of works to be grant aided, the determination as to whether an application meets the eligibility criteria, the amount of assistance to be provided, the relative priority of applications, etc.
