Ceist:

341 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons who have been arrested to date under the arrest provisions of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996; the length of time they have been detained; and the number who have subsequently been charged with any offence under the Act. [28585/00]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that 2,288 persons have been detained on suspicion of drug trafficking under section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, from 9 September 1996 to 17 November 2000, inclusive.

The duration spent in custody of those detained is as follows:

I have been further informed that from 9 September 1996 to 17 November 2000, 1,431 persons have been charged following detention under the Act.
