Vol. 527 No. 4

Written Answers. - Asylum Support Services.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

162 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the purchase of another property will result in the property at Myshall, County Carlow, no longer being needed to house refugees; and his views on whether the Myshall property was unsuitable, due to its rural location and lack of State support structures locally, as a refugee centre. [28823/00]

Due to the increase in the number of asylum seekers in the past year and the current shortage of accommodation the need to source suitable accommodation for asylum seekers is ongoing and remains a priority within the Directorate for Asylum Support Services.

In sourcing accommodation every effort is made to ensure that asylum seekers located outside Dublin have access to a range of necessary services.

In the light of this, the intention of using the property at Myshall on a short-term basis to accommodate asylum seekers is being kept under review in conjunction with other State agencies in the context of other long-term uses for it being identified.
