Ceist:

196 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of higher diploma in education graduates in the past three years; the number of these who entered the teaching profession; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28984/00]

The most up-to-date figures available on the number of graduates from the higher diploma in education are as follows:

The Higher Education Authority undertakes an annual survey of the first destinations of award recipients in higher education in April of the year following graduation. The most recent cohort of graduates for whom survey results are available concerns those who graduated in 1998. Details of the survey responses from higher diploma graduates from 1996 to 1998 are set out below by reference to graduates who reported that they were employed in teaching, whether in Ireland or abroad and for those employed in teaching in Ireland, whether their employment was permanent or temporary-part-time-substitute teaching.
