Vol. 527 No. 5

Written Answers. - Breast Feeding Promotion.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

148 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Health and Children the provisions for which he has allowed in the Estimates to promote and develop the level of breast feeding here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29039/00]

A final decision has, as yet, not been taken in relation to the allocation of resources in support of individual health promotion initiatives in 2001. Nevertheless, I shall continue to support, as resources permit, health promotion initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of the benefits of breast feeding in Ireland. As the Deputy is aware, I propose to establish the post of national breast feeding co-ordinator. This post has been recently advertised and it is hoped that an appointment will follow without delay. The establishment of a national committee on breast feeding has also been considered and arrangements are being made for the appointment of such a committee. The committee will work with the national breast feeding co-ordinator, in partnership with the community workers, in the effective implementation of the national breast feeding policy for Ireland.
