Vol. 527 No. 5

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Legislation.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

198 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will amend the Broadcasting Bill, 1999, with a view to having an assessment made of each individual radio station; and if she will evaluate if each station has fulfilled its obligations before a decision is made on the renewal of their licence as recommended by the IBI. [29182/00]

Under the Radio and Television Act, 1988, the Independent Radio and Television Commission is responsible for the provision of sound broadcasting services other than those provided by RTE. An amendment of the nature proposed by the Deputy would seriously undermine the role of the Independent Radio and Television Commission in this regard.
