Vol. 527 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

201 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans he has to re-introduce Operation Shannon in view of recent robberies which have taken place in the west; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29029/00]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue): I am informed by Garda authorities that Operation Shannon involved checkpoints on a 24 hour basis at each Shannon crossing, backed up by armed and air support. While there are no plans to re-introduce this particular operation at present, the situation is kept under constant review by Garda management.
I am, however, informed that another crime prevention operation, Operation Iarthair, began in every district in the western region on 14 November 2000. The main objective of this operation is to intercept criminals travelling into the region to carry out burglaries.
