Vol. 527 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Alan M. Dukes

Ceist:

31 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on his plans for mental health promotion. [28767/00]

In line with the National Health Promotion Strategy 2000-2005, the Department of Health and Children aims to reduce the percentage of the population experiencing poor mental health. To achieve this, research into models of best practice in health promotion has been identified as a key objective. This research will allow the Department to achieve the highest possible standards in the promotion of mental health issues. In addition, the development of a national positive mental health strategy is planned. This will provide a foundation from which future initiatives in mental health can be built.

The high rate of suicide in Ireland and in particular the rate amongst young men has been identified as a major cause of concern. The national health promotion strategy supports the implementation of the recommendations of the report of the national task force on suicide.
