Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers' Scheme.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

173 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Finance if he will have inquiries made into the exceptional circumstances of a person (details supplied) in County Carlow who is caring for his sister and has applied for a primary medical certificate in order to avail of the mobility allowance scheme; and if the application can be expedited. [29298/00]

It is understood that this question refers to the disabled drivers and passengers tax relief scheme which is administered by the Revenue Commissioners, and not the mobility allowance scheme which comes under the aegis of the Minister for Health and Children.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they have no record of an application or enquiry by the person concerned regarding relief under the disabled drivers and passengers scheme. The position is that an application for the relief cannot be entertained without the issue of a primary medical certificate by the appropriate senior area medical officer, who is an official of the local health authority. From inquiries made with the South Eastern Health Board, I understand that an application for a primary medical certificate has only recently been received and that this certificate has now been issued.

The certificate should be submitted to the Revenue Commissioners, Central Repayments Office, Coolshannagh, Monaghan – phone (047) 82800, together with the appropriate application form, where the application for relief will be processed in the normal way. Application forms and further information on the scheme may also be obtained from that office.
