Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Doctors.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

208 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on the situation where the Government backed a non-consultant hospital doctor recruitment drive to hire Pakistani doctors has been dealt a serious blow by the discovery that many of the posts to which doctors have been recruited are not approved by the College of Anaesthetists. [29344/00]

The recent visit to India and Pakistan to recruit anaesthetists is one of a number of initiatives which have been undertaken to improve the recruitment and retention of junior hospital doctors in the public health service. As a result of the India/Pakistan trip a panel of anaesthetists has been formed from which vacancies will be filled as they arise. Thirty of those candidates are due to take up duty in January and an agreed structured rotation for training for these posts has been agreed with the College of Anaesthetists.
