Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

304 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals he has received from local authorities to extract water from the River Barrow for domestic use in towns adjacent to the river; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29748/00]

The only such current proposal notified to my Department arises from the Kildare water strategy study, which will examine potential alternative sources of water supply for County Kildare. In July of this year, in the context of that study, I approved the appointment by Kildare County Council of consultants to prepare a proposal for a water abstraction order in respect of the River Barrow under the Water Supplies Act, 1942.

Ceist:

305 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will include an extra area in the proposed sewerage development for a town in County Kildare (details supplied) in view of the fact that the local authority supports the inclusion of the area in the development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29749/00]

The Castledermot sewerage scheme is included in the Water Services Investment Programme, 2000 to 2002, under the rural towns and villages initiative. Contract documents for the sewerage treatment works were approved in August this year. The preliminary report for the collection system was approved in June 1999 but I understand that it did not include provision for serving the area referred to.
