Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

415 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of the recent clarification from the south Dublin planning authority (details supplied) he will direct his officials to proceed further with proposals for the provision of two primary schools and one post-primary school in the Lucan, County Dublin area. [29509/00]

At my Department's request, two sites have been reserved in the Adamstown area of Lucan, one for a primary school and the other for a post-primary school, to meet anticipated need in the area. A further site for a primary school has been reserved in the Griffeen-Foxborough area.

The process of assessing the need for new or additional educational facilities at primary or post-primary level in any given area entails consideration of all relevant factors, including enrolment and demographic trends, housing developments and the capacity of existing schools to meet the demand for places.

Some information has been received in my Department from South Dublin County Council in relation to developments in the Adamstown area. However, the information received to date would not be sufficient to enable a final decision on school provision in the area. My officials will contact the county council to obtain the most up to date information on the extent and pace of housing development and projected population growth.

As soon as these details are obtained and examined in my Department, a definite decision will be made regarding additional primary and post-primary provision in the area.
