Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Rage.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

50 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will put in place a research project into the causes of road rage incidents which can draw on the research already carried out in the United States and the United Kingdom but which will take into account the increase in road rage incidents in Ireland which have led to serious accidents and sometimes fatal consequences. [29425/00]

I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 114 and 144 of 8 November 2000.

The phenomenon of road rage has not been prioritised in Irish road safety research which is currently focused on issues such as speeding, seat belt wearing, involvement of young people in road accidents and drugs and driving, as well as on evaluation of the effectiveness of road safety enforcement, engineering and awareness programmes.

I propose to refer the matter raised in the question for further assessment by the National Roads Authority, which has a co-ordinating role for road safety research, and to the high level group on road safety.
