Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Offshore Islands.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

21 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if arts and culture initiatives on the islands are encouraged; the way in which this is being done; if such support will be expanded and will not be limited by the fact that island population is relatively small. [30043/00]

Arts and culture initiatives on the islands are encouraged in a number of ways both directly by my Department and by Údaras na Gaeltachta. For example, my Department is financially supporting the development of an arts centre on Inis Oirr under the cultural development incentive scheme. Island communities were eligible on an equal basis with everybody else to submit proposals for funding for capital infrastructure initiatives under the Access scheme. My Department also provides arts and culture grants to various island groups for activities such as the holding of island festivals and the mounting of exhibitions by island artists. The grants awarded in 2000 are outlined in the following tabular statement.
