Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disposal of Animal Carcases.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

77 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the discussions he has had concerning the safe disposal of cattle who have died from BSE; and if he has discussed the provision of an incinerator for this purpose. [30156/00]

My Department and I have had discussions with the EPA and with a number of other interests in relation to a several possible options, including incineration, for the disposal of cattle which have died from BSE.

As these discussions are ongoing, and as they involve proposals from a number of commercial interests, it would be inappropriate for me to go into further detail at this time. However, I can assure the Deputy that I am actively seeking a viable solution to this complex problem and that I will not hesitate to take action when the various options have been properly evaluated and an appropriate solution is found.
