Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

823 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide a specific budget to local authorities to erect flashing lights at primary schools as a road safety measure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1678/01]

I am aware that the National Roads Authority has completed a special programme for the installation of standard safety facilities at some 300 schools located on the national road network. A new sub-programme of low cost remedial measures for non-national roads was commenced in 2000 and will be continued. My Department will draw the attention of road authorities in the context of this sub-programme, as well as in the context of the use of discretionary grants under the non-national roads programme more generally, to the desirability of providing flashing lights in the vicinity of schools on significantly trafficked non-national roads.
