Vol. 529 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prescription Drugs.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

114 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will introduce regulations which will ensure the official recording of all drugs prescribed to patients by doctors. [2657/01]

The position is that the Guide to Ethical Conduct and Behaviour– fifth edition, 1998 – prepared and published by the Medical Council and applicable to all doctors states clearly that it is in the interests of both doctors and patients that accurate records are always kept. This requirement extends to the keeping of proper records concerning prescriptions.

The guide further recommends that these records be retained for an adequate period and not disposed of without due recourse to advice from legal and insurance bodies. Doctors are also reminded within these rules of their responsibility in advising administrative authorities of the importance of the storage of medical records in such a manner that facilitates easy access to clinical staff when necessary for patient management.

I am satisfied that the present arrangement is satisfactory and, accordingly, have no plans, at present, to introduce regulations. However, if the Deputy is aware of any instances where doctors are failing in their professional responsibilities in this area he should bring them to my attention.
