Vol. 529 No. 3

Written Answers. - Traffic Regulations.

John Browne

Ceist:

120 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the blueish headlights in some cars meet the legal standard for headlights. [2888/01]

Under the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963 a vehicle may show only a white or yellow light to the front of the vehicle. The provision does not apply to direction indicators.

Zenon gas discharge headlamps fitted by manufacturers to some new cars and zenon gas filled replacement headlamp bulbs which can be fitted to most cars emit intensely white light which can appear to have a blue tinge, depending on the position of the observer. Such headlamps and bulbs have been type approved in accordance with European Union law and are consequently in compliance with Irish lighting law.

I refer also to the reply to Questions Nos. 851 and 852 of 30 January 2001.
