Vol. 529 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

40 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science the general average class size in second level schools in comparison to OECD countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2706/01]

International comparative data on average class size at second level are not available. However, data on pupil-teacher ratio are available and are set out in the following table. The most recent comparative data refer to 1997-98. The Deputy will see that the pupil-teacher ratio at second level in Ireland was 16.3 compared with an OECD country mean of 15.8.

The pupil-teacher ratio in Ireland has continued to improve. In 1999-2000 it was of the order of 15.1:1 and it will decline further in the current year.
