Vol. 529 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medicinal Products.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

161 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason a particular drug (details supplied) which is beneficial to persons who suffer a rare form of Parkinson's disease is not available to public patients without charge; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2975/01]

I presume the Deputy is referring to botulinum toxin. As this product is restricted to hospital or medical specialist use, it is not considered appropriate for inclusion in any of the community based schemes.

The arrangements for the reimbursement or supply of specialised medicinal products, which are ordinarily hospital-specialist clinic-based products, are under consideration by my Department at present. The arrangements for the reimbursement or supply of this product will be considered in the light of the overall examination.
