Vol. 529 No. 4

Written Answers. - Death Certificates.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

177 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason for the delay in granting a death certificate to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny relating to the death of her partner. [3150/01]

The administration of the registration system is statutorily for An tArd-Chláraitheoir (Register-General) of Births, Deaths and Marriages and for Registrars who operate under his general direction.

I have had inquiries made with An tArd-Chláraitheoir and he has informed me that the death mentioned by the Deputy was referred to the coroner and consequently the registrar was obliged to await the issue of a coroner's certificate before registering the death. However, I understand that an error was noted in the first certificate issued by the coroner and an amended certificate was requested by the registrar. An amended certificate was furnished by the coroner and the death was registered on 25 January 2001. I understand that the registrar has issued death certificates to the person referred to by the Deputy.
