Vol. 529 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

262 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science if an additional teacher will be allocated to a school (details supplied) in Dublin 3 which serves a disadvantaged community; and if the school will now be designated as disadvantaged. [3143/01]

Schools participating in the new pro gramme are eligible to receive a range of additional supports to be targeted at disadvantaged pupils. The additional supports to be provided reflect the level of concentration of pupils from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds in each school invited to participate in the programme.

The school in question has been included in the urban dimension of the major new programme launched by me last month to address educational disadvantage. It already benefits from inclusion in the disadvantaged areas scheme. The school will receive supplementary grant aid of £3,867 towards providing additional educational supports for the children concerned. In relation to staffing, the school in question has sufficient teaching staff already to implement the maximum class size guidelines of 20:1 in junior classes and 29:1 in senior classes set under the new programme in respect of the current school year. The staffing allocation for the 2001-02 school year will be based on the enrolment in the school on 30 September 2000 and will be examined in the context of any changes to the staffing schedule for national schools.
