As Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, I am responsible for providing sufficient resources to the Garda Síochána so that they can carry out their job in an efficient and effective manner. In this regard, I would point out that since I have taken office the strength of the Garda Síochána has been increased by approximately 800 members and I am on target to further increase the total strength of the Garda Síochána to an all time high of 12,000 by the end of 2002.
The detailed allocation of Garda resources, including manpower, is a matter for the Garda authorities. In this regard, I am informed that the allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is carried out with due regard for a number of factors in the various Garda districts throughout the country. These factors, which have particular relevance in assisting with the efficient and equitable allocation of Garda personnel resources, include population, geographical area to be covered and crime levels. Furthermore, Garda manpower assigned throughout the country, together with overall policing arrangements and operational strategy, are continually monitored and reviewed.
