Vol. 530 No. 3

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

238 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department is in receipt of an application for the provision of closed circuit television in Kilkenny city; the status of this application; and when the system will be installed. [3598/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that an application for a Garda CCTV system in Kilkenny was received by the CCTV advisory committee on 20 January 2001.

To date, the advisory committee, established by the Garda Commissioner to evaluate CCTV applications, has received in excess of 40 applications for Garda CCTV systems as aids to policing. The application from Kilkenny is currently under consideration, as indeed are applications from other cities and towns.
Applications for Garda CCTV systems are assessed by the CCTV advisory committee on the basis of Garda operational needs and include the following criteria: crime/public order statistics in the area, population and level of activity there, the recommendation of local Garda management and any special circumstances/needs that exist and the likely impact of a Garda CCTV system on that area.
At present, 12 locations – in alphabetical order – have been prioritised for the installation of Garda CCTV systems in 2001-2002 as follows: Athlone, Bray, Cork, which is nearing completion, Clondalkin, Dublin South Central, which is nearing completion, Dún Laoghaire, Dundalk, Finglas, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Tallaght. Other selected areas will commence at a later stage and they will be announced in due course.
