Ceist:

81 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the amount of funding allocated by his Department towards the carrying out of research into BSE; the location where such research is taking place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4277/01]

As outlined in the following table, £1,620,824 was provided by my Department for non-commissioned research into TSE, BSE and scrapie, related projects under measure 3(ii) of the food sub-programme 1994-1999. In addition, £55 million is being provided to research institutions under the food institutional research measure of the productive sector operational programme of the National Development Plan 2000-2006. Priority under this measure will be given to food safety. This does not include a range of work carried out by my Department, including epidemiological investigations, techni cal developmental work carried out at the central veterinary research laboratory or ongoing work investigating genotypic susceptibility to scrapie in commercial sheep flocks.
