217 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health and Children the location of, country of origin, experimental purpose and arrangements for completion of experiments of the 22 transgenic sheep listed in his Department's statistics for experimental animals in 1999. [4445/01]
I am advised that the animals referred to were not transgenic, but naturally bred sheep sourced locally. The inclusion of the sheep under the heading, transgenic, was a data entry error which occurred in compilation of the report. Steps are being taken to correct the data concerned. A total of 24 sheep were used in the research project for safety evaluation of veterinary medicinal products in accordance with EU regulatory requirements. The animals were housed at a veterinary research facility and returned to the flock on completion of the project.
