Vol. 530 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

John Perry

Ceist:

288 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the funding which will be allocated to Sligo County Council for staffing increases in a number of departments and in particular for the creation of additional posts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4545/01]

It is a matter for each local authority to determine its own expenditure requirements in the context of its annual estimates. Expenditure arising as a result of the provision of additional staffing would be dealt with by local authorities in this estimates context. Such expenditure is funded from a variety of sources, including the local government fund and other State grants, rates, fees and charges.

Grants totalling £7.854 million have been allocated to Sligo County Council from the local government fund in respect of the year 2001 as a contribution towards its general purpose needs, including the costs of staffing. It is ultimately a matter for each local authority to decide as to how its local government fund allocation is spent.
