Vol. 530 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rent Increases.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

373 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will introduce legislation to address the services situation that exists on the west side of the main street in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, where there is occupational leasehold and some rents have increased by 500% on review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4815/01]

I am aware of the difficulties that certain tenants in Carrickmacross have experienced in relation to the purchase of the freehold interest in their properties. While the Circuit Court has, it appears, confirmed the tenants' right of purchase, I understand the decision of the Circuit Court is the subject of an appeal to the High Court.

The Deputy will appreciate that I could not undertake to propose legislation the specific purpose of which would be to intervene between the rights of parties to the case. However, I shall keep the general principles of the subject matter under review having regard to the code of law relating to both landlords and tenants.
