384 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will make a special allocation to the Gorey three day cycle race organised by the Irish Road Club; and if, in view of the prestigious nature of this event, he will outline other potential areas of funding for this organisation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The development and promotion of a particular sport is primarily a matter for the relevant governing body. In this case, the governing body concerned is the Federation of Irish Cyclists, which is supported by the Irish Sports Council on an annual basis towards the costs associated with the development and promotion of the sport, including the possible funding of events such as this, depending on its status within the international cycling calendar.
