In order to eliminate the situation whereby sports capital grants allocated to clubs and organisations were not being drawn down, the sunset clause provision was introduced in 1998. The effect of this is that grants allocated since then have to be drawn down by a specific date, otherwise they are withdrawn. The time allowed is one year approximately for small projects and a year and a half approximately for larger projects.
Under the local authority swimming pool programme I allocated a grant of £1.5 million to Waterford Corporation in 2000 for the refurbishment of the Waterford Crystal swimming pool.
