Vol. 531 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

104 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of deaths which have taken place on the N2 national primary roads from Dublin and Moybridge, north Monaghan; if he has, in conjunction with the National Roads Authority, proposals to replace Slane bridge; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5032/01]

Statistics relating to road accidents are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual Road Accident Facts reports. The most recent report is in respect of 1999 and that report, along with reports relating to previous years, are available in the Oireachtas Library.

The report includes details in relation to fatal and injury accidents on national routes classified by route and by location type. In the case of the N2 national route, there was a total of eight fatal accidents in 1999.

Responsibility for promoting improvement works on national roads rests with the National Roads Authority in co-operation with the local authority concerned.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

105 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the agenda for the crisis meeting of senior Government Ministers to tackle the spiralling death toll on Irish roads; and the persons or groups he expects to attend that meeting. [5036/01]

A meeting of the High Level Group on Road Safety is scheduled for 28 February 2001. This group is chaired by my Department and consists of representatives from the Departments of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and Health and Children, the Garda, the National Roads Authority, the National Safety Council, the Medi cal Bureau of Road Safety and the Irish Insurance Federation.

I intend to address the group to emphasise the Government's support for the continued and active implementation of the Road Safety Strategy 1998-2002 and to encourage the road safety agencies in their efforts to this end.

I will arrange for the agenda for the meeting to be forwarded to the Deputy.
