Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - Deportation Orders.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

179 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the instructions which have been issued to officials of the Garda immigration bureau in regard to the execution of a deportation order in cases where the deportee requires or is likely to require medical care or assistance for any reason; and if such instructions make reference to the UNHCR recommendations on referring to medical advice in such cases. [5275/01]

The execution of a deportation order is an operational matter for the Garda national immigration bureau. I understand that in any case where a person in Garda custody, including a person arrested on foot of a deportation order, requires medical attention, the gardaí will ensure that such person receives medical attention immediately. While my Department understands from UNHCR that they do not have specific guidelines in this direction I assure the Deputy that the Garda national immigration bureau will not deport any person where there is medical advice that such person is unfit to travel.
