Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - Immigration Controls.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

183 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the extent and nature of the monitoring activities carried out by the UNHCR in relation to the operation of the State's immigration controls and asylum system, especially where border controls are concerned. [5279/01]

I have no responsibility for any monitoring activities carried out by the UNHCR in relation to the operation of the State's immigration control and asylum system. However, the role of the UNHCR in relation to the asylum application and determination process is set out in the Refugee Act, 1996, as amended. There is no provision in Irish law for a UNHCR role in relation to general immigration matters.
