Ceist:

31 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of traveller accommodation plans started by various local authorities since the introduction of the Housing (Traveller Accommodation) Act, 1998; the action he is taking to achieve this objective in view of the necessity to provide an additional 3,600 housing units by 2004; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ceist:

114 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of Traveller accommodation plans adopted by various local authorities; and the action he is taking to achieve an additional 3,600 units by 2004. [2094/01]

A total of 38 Traveller accommodation programmes have been adopted by all local authorities required to do so. All relevant local authorities are now proceeding with the implementation of their accommodation programmes. My Department will continue to provide the necessary capital funding required to achieve the target contained in the programmes of providing accommodation for 3,600 Traveller families in the period up to the end of 2004.
The National Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee, whose function it is to advise me on matters relating to Traveller accommodation, is undertaking a comprehensive evaluation of each Traveller accommodation programme. The evaluation will include an assessment of the adequacy of the programmes and the proposals in the programmes for their implementation. I expect to receive the committee's report shortly. Any follow-up action which may be required arising from the report will be taken up with individual local authorities by my Department.
