Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - Alcohol Abuse.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

94 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason his Department has not acknowledged in financial terms, the efforts of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association to arrest the increased use of alcohol, particularly among young people; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5187/01]

The national alcohol policy, published by my Department in 1996, is directed at reducing the prevalence of alcohol related problems through an emphasis on moderation in alcohol consumption. The aims and objectives in relation to sensible drinking, as set out in the national health promotion strategy, published in July 2000, reflect this approach. In particular, the health promotion unit of my Department will continue to work in partnership with health boards and relevant agencies in implementing these objectives.

Many voluntary organisations apply to the health promotion unit each year for funding for various projects. However, the budget for assisting such organisations is limited and submissions for funding need to be accompanied by well structured proposals which address the aims and objectives outlined in the national health promotion strategy. The unit will continue to examine and, as far as possible, support each application that fulfil these criteria. The Deputy should note that the health boards also provide assistance at a local level to such organisations.
