Ceist:

283 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount given to each local authority in Counties Leitrim, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan and Galway and Sligo Corporation for the provision of sewerage schemes for the years 1995 to 2000; and the percentage increase or decrease in each local authority for each year. Funding for major sewerage schemes is provided for local authorities on a project rather than a programme basis. Expenditure incurred by local authorities on individual approved schemes is recouped by my Department in response to payment claims submitted by authorities. Recoupments made to the local authorities concerned under these arrangements are set out in table 1.

Details of expenditure on small schemes under the rural water programme are set out in table 2. Responsibility for the administration of the rural water programme was devolved to local authorities in 1997 when new funding arrangements, involving 75% block grants from my Department, were introduced. Under the devolved arrangements selection of individual schemes for construction under the rural water programme is now a matter for the authorities themselves. Accord ingly, the figures provided in the table for 1997 to date do not differentiate between water and sewerage schemes.
